The Leopold Fellowship training has been of tremendous value in helping me tailor my presentations to each audience… and while my presentations have gotten shorter, I believe the information transfer has gotten greater. I've learned how to be more focused and hence, more effective.

Training
Non-Governmental Organizations
Working with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can be an effective way for academic environmental scientists to communicate scientific information that is immediately relevant to public knowledge and policy decisions and to learn about "hot" policy issues. Presentations in this module cover the different types of NGOs, their activities, and how scientists and NGOs can collaborate. Fellows will meet with NGO scientists and leaders to discuss science-policy-public interactions and to identify areas where scientific information is needed but lacking. Topics covered in this session include: - Understanding NGO structures and cultures
- What NGOs want and need from environmental scientists
- Developing contacts and finding common ground within the NGO community
- Evaluating opportunities for collaboration
