testimonial

The (Leopold Leadership) training convinced me that scientists have to communicate more broadly with the public and that the media provides a wonderful vehicle that scientists should use. I've always tried to stay out of the media but the training convinced me that I've been wrong...I'm willing to talk to reporters while before I had to be trapped with no chance of escape. The public has been well served, I believe by this change...In addition to being more comfortable helping reporters get their story and understand the science, I'm using many of the materials from the training in my class.

University of Washington
2000 Leopold Fellow

Program Mission
The mission of the Leopold Leadership Program at Stanford University’s Woods Institute for the Environment is to advance environmental decision making by providing academic environmental scientists the skills and connections they need to be effective leaders and communicators. It brings together outstanding academic scientists from across North America, provides them with leadership and communications training to assist in working with nonscientific audiences, and builds a network of scientists and trainers committed to science outreach beyond the academy.

Training and Support
The Leopold Leadership Fellowship selects up to 20 Fellows annually, supports them to participate in two intensive one-week training sessions, and offers other services and non-financial resources associated with outreach and leadership skill development during the Fellowship year and beyond. As members of the Leopold Leadership Network, Fellows receive ongoing opportunities for peer networking, mentoring from trainers and past Fellows, and promotion as environmental experts. Please note that there is no direct financial award or stipend associated with this Fellowship.
The following expenses are covered by the Leopold Leadership Program for each Fellow:

  • Roundtrip economy class transportation (airfare, train, etc.) between the training sites and the Fellow's home city. All travel arrangements are made through the program's travel agent.
  • Incidental travel expenses, such as airport shuttles, meals at airports, etc.
  • Accommodations and meals at the training sites

The Leopold Leadership Program does not pay for the following expenses, either directly or by reimbursement:

  • Rental cars at the training sites
  • Personal or business related expenses, such as phone charges, faxes, overnight delivery services, purchase of personal items, etc.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
The training sessions, while informal, are intensive and focused. It is the policy of the program that spouses, partners, family members, and friends do not accompany Fellows to the training sites or participate in any of the activities. The Leopold Leadership Fellowship covers expenses and accommodations for individual Fellows only.
